What's Happening?
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport is set to expand its terminal by approximately 10,000 square feet, with construction expected to begin in September. The expansion aims to alleviate congestion at the Transportation Security Administration
checkpoint and improve passenger flow. The project, which has been approved by the airport board, will cost nearly $13.6 million, with funding primarily from the Federal Aviation Administration and the state Department of Transportation. The airport will contribute a small percentage through a fee on passenger tickets. The expansion will also include a new exit lane and a lounge area for families and friends waiting for arriving passengers. Interim executive director Stephen Mykulyn stated that the construction is expected to take 16 months. Additionally, Lackawanna County Commissioner Chris Chermak has hinted at his interest in applying for the position of the airport's executive director.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport terminal is significant as it addresses the growing need for improved infrastructure to handle increasing passenger numbers. In March, the airport saw a 2.1% increase in passengers compared to the previous year, marking the second-best March since 1985. This growth underscores the importance of modernizing facilities to enhance passenger experience and safety, especially in light of potential future pandemics. The project is also a critical investment in the region's transportation infrastructure, potentially boosting local economic activity and job creation during the construction phase. Furthermore, the interest of Commissioner Chris Chermak in the executive director position highlights potential leadership changes that could influence the airport's strategic direction.
What's Next?
The airport board has hired ADK Consulting & Executive Search to assist in finding a new executive director, with a decision expected by July. The application deadline for the position is May 10, and interim director Stephen Mykulyn is considering applying. The outcome of this leadership search could impact the airport's future operations and strategic initiatives. As the expansion project progresses, stakeholders will be monitoring its impact on passenger satisfaction and operational efficiency. The successful completion of the expansion could set a precedent for further infrastructure investments in the region.
