What's Happening?
The BRICS countries have agreed to establish four new global networks aimed at enhancing cooperation in agriculture. These include the BRICS Network of Centres of Excellence on Agro-Ecology and Regenerative Agriculture, the BRICS Network on Digital Agriculture, the Global
Forum on Farmers’ Rights in Seed Systems, and the BRICS AgriN – Agro Inputs, Genetic Resources and Information Network. The initiatives were announced during the BRICS Agriculture Ministers meeting in Indore, India, and are part of the 'Indore Declaration' which focuses on food security, climate-resilient farming, and digital agriculture. The networks aim to facilitate joint research, knowledge sharing, and capacity building among member countries.
Why It's Important?
These initiatives are crucial for promoting sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural practices among BRICS countries. By focusing on agro-ecology, digital agriculture, and farmers' rights, the networks aim to address global challenges such as food security and climate change. The collaboration will enable member countries to share best practices and innovations, potentially leading to more efficient and sustainable agricultural systems. The focus on digital agriculture also highlights the importance of integrating technology into farming practices, which can lead to increased productivity and better resource management.
What's Next?
The BRICS countries will work on implementing the initiatives outlined in the Indore Declaration. This includes setting up the networks and beginning collaborative projects in areas such as digital agriculture and seed systems. The success of these initiatives will depend on the active participation of member countries and their ability to translate research into practical solutions. The networks are expected to serve as platforms for ongoing dialogue and cooperation, potentially influencing agricultural policies and practices on a global scale.
