Florida researchers have announced the discovery of a new mosquito species, Aedes amateuri, in the United States for the first time. Previously, this species had only been recorded in Mexico. Scientists have now found Aedes amateuri in the Sky Islands
region of southeastern Arizona. According to the University of Florida, this mosquito is known to feed on humans and other large mammals. However, very little else is currently known about the species, including its potential to spread diseases. The mosquito's biology and habitat make it challenging to detect, as it typically thrives in temporary pools of water that form after warm monsoon rains. This means that adult mosquitoes may only flourish when specific rainfall conditions occur in the right locations. Arizona already hosts over 40 mosquito species, many of which emerge during the state's wettest and warmest months, from March to October.
