What's Happening?
Aurora Public Schools (APS) is scheduled to break ground on a new health sciences high school on October 8, 2026. This new magnet school will be located adjacent to the Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus at 12095 E. Montview Blvd. in Aurora. The school plans
to welcome its first class of students in the fall of 2027. Upon opening, the institution will offer specialized curriculum and hands-on learning experiences in health sciences, facilitated through a partnership with UCHealth and the Community College of Aurora (CCA). Students will have the opportunity to choose from five career and technical education pathways, including nursing, behavioral health, medical imaging, surgical technology, and respiratory therapy. The APS Board of Education is expected to vote on an official school name in October, with a recommendation for 'Aurora HEART: Health Sciences High School'.
Why It's Important?
This new health sciences high school represents a significant investment in workforce development and educational innovation within Aurora and the broader U.S. healthcare sector. By providing specialized training and hands-on experience at the high school level, APS is directly addressing the growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals. The partnership with UCHealth and CCA creates a seamless pathway from secondary education to higher education and ultimately into the workforce, which is crucial for building a robust local talent pipeline. This model, particularly as the first health science P-TECH school managed by a public school district in Colorado, could serve as a blueprint for other districts nationwide looking to integrate career-focused education with academic rigor. It offers students a clear advantage in a competitive job market and contributes to strengthening the healthcare infrastructure.
What's Next?
Following the groundbreaking, construction of the new health sciences high school will commence, with an anticipated opening in the fall of 2027. The APS Board of Education will finalize the school's official name in October. Prospective students will be able to apply starting November 13 on the APS magnet school website. The school is expected to enroll 125 ninth-grade students in its inaugural year and will progressively add a new grade each year until it reaches its full capacity of approximately 450 students across grades nine through twelve. The partnerships with UCHealth and CCA will continue to develop, ensuring the curriculum remains relevant and provides students with valuable clinical experiences and opportunities for associate degrees in nursing or behavioral health.
Beyond the Headlines
The establishment of the Aurora HEART: Health Sciences High School has deeper implications for educational equity and community health. By offering specialized pathways, the school can attract and prepare a diverse student body for high-demand, well-paying careers, potentially breaking cycles of poverty and fostering upward mobility within the community. This initiative also addresses the critical need for a diverse healthcare workforce that reflects the populations it serves, which can lead to improved health outcomes and reduced health disparities. Furthermore, by integrating with the Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, students will gain exposure to cutting-edge medical research and practices, inspiring future innovators and leaders in healthcare. This model underscores a shift towards more vocational and career-oriented education within the U.S. public school system, aiming to better align educational outcomes with economic needs.
