What's Happening?
The Cleveland Guardians are set to add Andy McKay, the Mariners' assistant general manager, to their 2026 coaching staff. McKay has a background in coaching and player development, having served as the head
baseball coach at Sacramento City College for 14 seasons and as the Rockies' peak performance coordinator. He joined the Mariners in 2015 as director of player development and was promoted to assistant GM in 2022. The Guardians are making this move following the departure of key coaching staff members, including Kai Correa and Craig Albernaz, who have taken positions with other teams.
Why It's Important?
The addition of Andy McKay to the Guardians' coaching staff is a strategic move to bolster their player development and performance capabilities. McKay's extensive experience in coaching and development is expected to bring valuable insights and strategies to the Guardians. His background in mental skills and education programs aligns with the Guardians' focus on comprehensive player development. This appointment is part of the Guardians' efforts to maintain a competitive edge in the league, especially after losing key staff members to other teams.
