What's Happening?
The RAND Corporation, a non-profit, non-partisan research organization, has announced its Summer Associate Program for 2027. This program is designed for outstanding graduate students across various disciplines, including social, behavioral, policy, and technical
sciences. Participants will engage in research on domestic and international social policy issues, as well as national security problems. Summer Associates typically work for a 12-week period, conducting research, presenting findings, and receiving mentorship from established RAND researchers. The 2027 program will operate under a hybrid model, offering both in-person work at RAND's major U.S. offices in Santa Monica, CA; Washington, DC; Pittsburgh, PA; and Boston, MA, or fully remote work. Eligibility requires students to reside in the U.S. throughout their summer assignment, with international students planning to live in the U.S. also eligible. Applicants must be full-time doctoral students who have completed at least two years of graduate work and are within two years of completing their doctorate, or Master's students in specific disciplines graduating on or after December 2027.
Why It's Important?
This program is significant for fostering the next generation of policy researchers and analysts in the U.S. By providing graduate students with hands-on experience in high-quality, objective research, RAND contributes to the development of expertise crucial for addressing complex national and international challenges. The hybrid model expands accessibility, allowing a broader range of talent to participate, which can lead to more diverse perspectives in policy analysis. The focus on both domestic social policy and national security issues ensures that critical areas of U.S. governance and safety receive continuous academic and analytical attention. For the students, it offers invaluable mentorship and networking opportunities, potentially shaping their careers in public policy and research, and for RAND, it brings fresh insights and contributions to its ongoing projects.
What's Next?
Applications for the 2027 Summer Associate Program are due by December 1, 2026. Following the application period, RAND will select eligible graduate students to participate in the 12-week program during the summer of 2027. Selected associates will then conduct their research, present their findings to the RAND community, and engage with other researchers. The program's outcomes will likely contribute to RAND's ongoing research portfolio, potentially influencing future policy discussions and decisions in areas such as national security and social policy. The success of this hybrid model could also set a precedent for future research internship programs, impacting how academic institutions and research organizations structure their talent development initiatives.
Beyond the Headlines
The RAND Corporation's commitment to nurturing graduate talent through its Summer Associate Program highlights a broader trend in U.S. research institutions to integrate academic rigor with practical policy application. This initiative underscores the importance of non-partisan, objective analysis in an increasingly complex global landscape. By requiring U.S. residency for all participants, the program implicitly reinforces the focus on U.S.-centric policy challenges and national interests, even when addressing international affairs. The emphasis on a diverse and inclusive environment within RAND also reflects a growing recognition across various sectors of the value of varied perspectives in problem-solving and decision-making, aiming to produce more robust and equitable policy recommendations.
