What's Happening?
The Center for Green Schools, the National Center on School Infrastructure, and the New Buildings Institute have launched the HVAC Change Lab. This initiative aims to improve the health and safety of U.S. school buildings by upgrading their heating, ventilation,
and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The lab will provide technical assistance and create a peer network for school districts, focusing on making HVAC systems more efficient and cleaner. Initially, the program will work with 12 to 15 school districts across the country, addressing issues like poor indoor air quality and outdated systems.
Why It's Important?
Improving HVAC systems in schools is crucial for enhancing indoor air quality, which directly impacts student health and academic performance. Efficient HVAC systems can reduce energy costs and support schools in managing extreme weather conditions. This initiative addresses significant barriers faced by school districts, such as limited technical guidance and funding challenges. By providing centralized support and expertise, the HVAC Change Lab can help schools overcome these obstacles, leading to healthier learning environments and potentially better educational outcomes.
