Lycoming Engines, a division of Avco Corporation, is celebrating over 95 years of producing aviation engines. The company, located in Williamsport, has a rich history dating back to 1845 when it was founded
by Ellen Demorest. Initially involved in manufacturing sewing machines, the company evolved over the years to produce automobile engines and later, aviation engines. In 1929, Lycoming produced its first aviation engine, the nine-cylinder R-680 radial, which powered aircraft such as Stinsons and Stearmans. Today, Lycoming continues to supply piston aircraft engines for various applications, including military training schools.
