What's Happening?
At the Mobile World Congress 2026, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) announced that Saudi Arabia's Mobily and Qatar's Ooredoo Group have pledged a combined $2.2 billion to the Partner2Connect Digital Coalition. This initiative aims to bridge
the digital divide by enhancing connectivity and digital infrastructure. Mobily's investment focuses on data centers, subsea cables, and next-generation network infrastructure, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030. Ooredoo's investment will expand optical fiber infrastructure across the MENA region. These commitments contribute to the ITU's goal of universal, meaningful connectivity, which seeks to provide affordable and reliable internet access globally.
Why It's Important?
The significant financial commitments from Mobily and Ooredoo highlight the growing importance of digital infrastructure in fostering economic growth and development. By enhancing connectivity, these investments support the ITU's mission to ensure that everyone has access to the internet, which is crucial for education, business, and social inclusion. The focus on expanding high-capacity connectivity across the MENA region is particularly important for supporting economic growth and resilience in these areas. The initiative also aligns with broader global efforts to reduce the digital divide and promote inclusive economic development.
