Hunter Hillel, serving over 1,100 commuter students in New York City, is actively seeking a Community Engagement Social Worker. This role is central to their Wellness Program, aiming to connect students with essential resources such as food, career services,
and mental health support. The social worker will be responsible for building relationships with students, mentoring student leaders, and integrating them into Jewish community life. Key duties include engaging 75 unique students annually, supervising undergraduate interns, developing new programs, co-facilitating Jewish Learning Fellowship classes, and recruiting for immersive experiences like Birthright. Additionally, the role involves managing food access programs, coordinating career services, providing short-term one-on-one support, and connecting students to broader campus mental health and housing services. The position requires an MSW, with LMSW and SIFI preferred, and experience with college-age students.
Why It's Important?
This initiative by Hunter Hillel addresses critical needs among its student population, many of whom are first-generation college students from lower- and middle-income backgrounds, often balancing significant work, family, and financial responsibilities. By providing an in-house social worker, Hunter Hillel aims to create a supportive environment that helps students navigate the complexities of college life, ensuring they feel supported and connected. This comprehensive approach to student wellness, encompassing food security, career readiness, and mental health, is vital for student retention and success. The program also fosters social wellness by building community and belonging, which can significantly impact students' overall well-being and academic performance, particularly for those who may have limited prior exposure to Jewish life.
What's Next?
Hunter Hillel will proceed with the hiring process to fill the Community Engagement Social Worker position. Once hired, the individual will immediately begin implementing and expanding the Wellness Program. This will involve active outreach to students, establishing new support systems, and strengthening existing resource connections. The social worker will also be tasked with supervising interns and collaborating with other staff to ensure a cohesive approach to student engagement and support. The organization will continue to track engagement metrics and report data to funders like UJA-Federation and Hillel International, demonstrating the program's impact and securing future support for these vital services. The ongoing success of this role will likely lead to further development and expansion of wellness initiatives at Hunter Hillel.
Beyond the Headlines
The creation of this role highlights a growing recognition within educational and community organizations of the multifaceted challenges faced by contemporary college students, especially those from underserved backgrounds. It underscores a shift towards holistic support models that integrate social work principles directly into student life programming. This approach moves beyond traditional academic advising to address fundamental needs like food security and mental health, which are often prerequisites for academic success. The emphasis on building community and fostering a sense of belonging also speaks to the broader societal need for social connection in an increasingly isolated world. This model could serve as a blueprint for other institutions looking to enhance student well-being and create more inclusive and supportive campus environments.
