Matson has partnered with WhaleSpotter to deploy a whale detection system developed by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). This makes Matson the first container shipping company to utilize
this advanced marine protection technology. The WhaleSpotter system uses thermal and AI-driven detection to monitor whales up to three nautical miles away, providing real-time alerts to vessel crews to prevent whale strikes. Matson has trialed three units and ordered four more for its vessels serving Hawaii and Alaska. The technology, refined to meet zero-false-alert requirements, is already being used by Matson crews to protect whales.
