What's Happening?
Educators are exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to support social-emotional learning (SEL) in schools. At the ISTELive 26 + ASCD annual conference, educators discussed how AI chatbots can help students practice empathy, perspective-taking,
and relationship skills in a low-pressure environment. Some educators have developed AI chatbots that simulate interactions with diverse characters, allowing students to engage in meaningful conversations and develop critical soft skills. However, there are concerns about AI's potential to undermine genuine human interactions and critical thinking.
Why It's Important?
The integration of AI in education, particularly for teaching social-emotional skills, represents a significant shift in how these essential skills are taught. As AI becomes more prevalent, the ability to empathize and communicate effectively will distinguish humans from machines. This development could enhance students' preparedness for future workplaces that value these skills. However, it also raises questions about the balance between technology and human interaction in education, highlighting the need for careful implementation and ethical considerations.
