What's Happening?
The Jersey Fire and Rescue Service has issued a warning about the dangers of cooking while under the influence of alcohol following two kitchen fires in St Helier. Firefighters responded to incidents where unattended cooking led to fires, one occurring at 5:30 AM on Sunday and another at 9:30 PM on Saturday. In both cases, individuals were treated for smoke inhalation. Duty station commander Mark Bailey-Walker emphasized that drinking alcohol while cooking significantly increases the risk of physical harm, particularly if one falls asleep.
Why It's Important?
These incidents highlight the critical need for public awareness regarding the risks associated with cooking under the influence of alcohol. Such behavior can lead to severe accidents, endangering lives and property. The warning serves as a reminder for individuals to exercise caution and responsibility in their homes, especially when engaging in activities that require attention and care. It also underscores the role of fire services in educating the public about safety practices to prevent domestic fires and related injuries.
