What's Happening?
Deepak Kumar Sah, the newly appointed Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security in Nepal, has prioritized the creation of a skilled workforce as his first major initiative. Upon taking office, Minister Sah signed a decision to develop a strategic
plan for the 'National Academy of Vocation Training'. This plan aims to address the lack of skilled manpower, which is a significant issue affecting employment opportunities, particularly for Nepalis seeking work abroad in Gulf countries. Minister Sah, elected from Mahottari Constituency No. 2, emphasized the importance of aligning skills training with educational programs to meet current workforce demands. The ministry's Secretary, Dr. Deepak Kafle, highlighted the government's goal to ensure that skills acquired lead to employment within five years.
Why It's Important?
The initiative to develop a skilled workforce is crucial for improving employment prospects for Nepalis, both domestically and internationally. By focusing on vocational training, the government aims to reduce the reliance on foreign employment, particularly in precarious conditions in Gulf countries. This move could enhance economic stability and growth by creating a more capable and competitive workforce. Additionally, it addresses the broader issue of unemployment and underemployment, which are significant challenges in Nepal. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for other countries facing similar workforce development challenges.
