A study conducted by Pure Earth and Ghana's Environmental Protection Authority has revealed dangerous levels of mercury contamination in communities near artisanal gold mining sites in Ghana. Soil readings in some areas have reached 134 times the safe levels, with arsenic levels also significantly exceeding World Health Organization guidelines. The surge in artisanal gold mining, driven by high bullion prices, has led to increased mercury pollution, posing serious health risks to local populations.
