What's Happening?
Phoenix International has successfully assisted the US Navy in recovering two aircraft that went down during routine flight operations in the South China Sea. The incident involved an MH-60R helicopter and an F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter aircraft, both
of which crashed within 30 minutes of each other on October 26, 2025, off the USS NIMITZ (CVN-68). Fortunately, all crew members survived and were rescued. Phoenix personnel mobilized from Singapore, utilizing search and recovery assets aboard vessels of opportunity. They employed towed pinger locator technology and side scan sonar to locate the aircraft. The recovery was executed using the SUPSALV Remotely Operated Vehicle HYDROS, overcoming high currents and undersea obstacles. By December 5, 2025, both aircraft were successfully brought to the surface and secured on deck.
Why It's Important?
This recovery operation underscores the strategic importance of maintaining operational readiness and capability in the South China Sea, a region of significant geopolitical tension. The successful recovery of the aircraft not only demonstrates the technical prowess and coordination between Phoenix International and the US Navy but also highlights the importance of salvage operations in maintaining naval assets. The incident and subsequent recovery efforts reflect the ongoing need for robust maritime operations and partnerships in contested waters, ensuring that the US Navy can continue its mission without prolonged asset losses. This operation also serves as a testament to the effectiveness of modern recovery technologies and the critical role of private sector partnerships in military operations.
What's Next?
Following the successful recovery, the US Navy will likely conduct thorough investigations into the cause of the crashes to prevent future incidents. The recovered aircraft will be assessed for damage and potential repair or replacement. Additionally, this event may prompt further evaluations of flight operation protocols and safety measures aboard naval vessels operating in high-risk areas. The collaboration between Phoenix International and the US Navy could lead to more joint operations in the future, enhancing salvage and recovery capabilities.
