Astronomers have discovered a third planet orbiting the star Beta Pictoris, located 63 light-years away in the southern constellation Pictor. This new planet, named Beta Pictoris d, is the faintest planet ever imaged from Earth. The discovery was made
using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile. Initially, astronomers were examining Beta Pictoris b, a known planet in the system, when they stumbled upon this new celestial body. Beta Pictoris d is a gas giant, 2.4 times more massive than Jupiter, and is situated farther from its star than the previously known planets, making it cold and faint. The discovery was confirmed by reviewing archival images from observatories like SPHERE and the Webb space telescope, revealing the planet had been hiding in plain sight for over a decade.
