What's Happening?
Tsodilo Resources has initiated a collaborative research project with the University of Cape Town's Department of Geological Sciences to advance its exploration of critical minerals and rare earth elements
in Botswana. This partnership aims to identify and quantify rare earth element-bearing minerals using advanced techniques such as automated mineralogy and isotopic analysis. The project focuses on the Gcwihaba Project area, which is rich in base, precious, platinum group, and rare earth metals. The collaboration will also involve local institutions like the Botswana Institute for Technology Research & Innovation and the Botswana Geoscience Institute for sample preparation and analysis.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it enhances the understanding and potential development of critical mineral resources in Botswana, a region with substantial untapped mineral wealth. The collaboration could lead to more efficient extraction and processing techniques, potentially boosting the local economy and contributing to the global supply of rare earth elements. These elements are crucial for various high-tech applications, including electronics and renewable energy technologies. The project aligns with global efforts to diversify sources of critical minerals, reducing dependency on dominant suppliers like China.
