What's Happening?
Eutelsat has announced a new multi-year agreement with Angolan telecommunications company Mercury, a subsidiary of the Sonangol Group. This deal will see Mercury utilizing Eutelsat's OneWeb low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity services. The agreement builds
on a previous deal signed in November 2025 and aims to expand the reach of LEO services for enterprise, public sector, offshore, and telecom customers across Angola. Mercury CEO Francisco Pinto Leite highlighted the value of LEO connectivity for their customers, while Philippe Baudrier, VP Africa at Eutelsat, noted the growing demand for these services in Angola. Eutelsat is the only LEO satellite operator licensed to offer services in Angola and has invested in local infrastructure, including a ground station and a local point of presence.
Why It's Important?
This agreement signifies a significant step in expanding satellite connectivity in Angola, which can enhance communication infrastructure in areas beyond the reach of traditional networks. The partnership between Mercury and Eutelsat could improve network resilience and provide secure, low-latency connectivity, benefiting various sectors such as enterprise and public services. This development is crucial for Angola's digital transformation and can potentially stimulate economic growth by improving access to modern communication technologies. The deal also underscores the strategic importance of LEO satellites in bridging connectivity gaps in underserved regions.
