What's Happening?
XPRIZE has announced the advancement of 20 finalist teams in the $101 million Healthspan competition, aimed at extending healthy human life. The competition, launched in November 2023, seeks to develop therapeutics that can restore muscle, cognition,
and immune function in adults aged 50 to 90 by at least 10 years. Of these finalists, 10 teams have been awarded $1 million each as Milestone 2 Awardees. These teams, hailing from the United States, South Korea, Japan, and China, will use the funds to accelerate the development and clinical testing of their therapeutic approaches. The competition emphasizes the development of proactive, accessible treatments targeting the biology of aging, with the ultimate goal of extending independence and improving the quality of life for older adults.

What's Next?
The finalist teams will now proceed to conduct rigorous clinical trials, which will last up to one year each, to evaluate their therapeutic solutions. These trials will focus on restoring muscle, cognition, and immune function in older adults. The University of Utah's Data Coordinating Center will oversee trial and data management, while the University of California San Diego Stein Institute for Research on Aging will coordinate shared laboratories and biomarker storage. The competition is set to culminate in 2030, with a grand prize of up to $81 million awarded for a breakthrough in healthspan science. This phase will be crucial in determining the viability and effectiveness of the proposed therapies.
