An international consortium of researchers, the Revived Genomics of Personality Consortium, has identified over 1,200 distinct genetic variants associated with the 'Big Five' personality traits: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion,
agreeableness, and neuroticism. This extensive study combined data from 46 research cohorts globally, where participants provided DNA samples and completed personality questionnaires. The findings indicate that while no single 'personality gene' exists and individual genetic variants have very small effects, their combined influence is more substantial and robust. For instance, genetic variants linked to extraversion in young Dutch adults also predicted extraversion in older U.S. retirees. The research also confirmed that these genetic links are not merely a byproduct of shared upbringing, though environmental factors still play a significant role in personality development. The study was supported in part by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute on Aging.
