A recent study conducted by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, led by psychology professors Sanda and Florin Dolcos and Kelly Hohl from the Phoenix VA Healthcare Center, has found that a five-week emotion-regulation training intervention significantly
reduced emotional distress and altered brain connectivity in college students. The training focused on two main strategies: focused attention and cognitive reappraisal. Focused attention involved directing participants to concentrate on neutral background elements in negative images or memories, such as trees in a traffic accident photo. Cognitive reappraisal taught participants to reframe potentially negative emotional situations in a more positive light, applying this to both provided images and their personal experiences. The study, detailed in the journal Scientific Reports, builds upon previous research with veterans, extending the intervention to a younger population experiencing low-level chronic stress. Participants engaged in exercises twice a week and were encouraged to practice these techniques daily.
