The Louisville Zoo has announced its partnership with the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources to aid in the recovery of the native Eastern hellbender salamander species. This initiative comes as the United States Fish & Wildlife Service proposed
endangered status for the Eastern hellbender in 2024 due to a significant decline in its population. Despite laying between 150-500 eggs, less than 1% of these salamanders typically survive to adulthood in the wild. In contrast, zoos can achieve a survival rate of up to 100%.
