Researchers at Stanford University and the Arc Institute have used an AI model to create 16 new viruses that never existed in nature. The AI, trained on trillions of nucleotides, designed complete DNA sequences for viruses, which were then chemically
synthesized. Of the 285 AI-generated viral genomes tested, 16 successfully assembled into functioning viruses capable of infecting bacteria. While the study demonstrates the potential for AI in genetic research, it also raises concerns about the lack of regulatory guardrails for such powerful applications.
