What's Happening?
Oregon's hazelnut farming is experiencing significant growth despite challenges faced by other agricultural sectors in the state. Jeff Newton, a farmer in Yamhill County, is investing in new hazelnut trees,
reflecting a broader trend in the Willamette Valley where hazelnut acreage has more than doubled over the past seven years. This growth is driven by consistent low prices for other crops and the high demand for hazelnuts. The Oregon Hazelnut Commission reports that the state produced between 115,000 to 125,000 tons of hazelnuts in 2025, with expectations for production to triple in the next six to seven years. The state's climate and the commitment of generational family farmers contribute to the quality and success of the hazelnut industry.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of hazelnut farming in Oregon is significant as it highlights a shift in agricultural priorities due to economic pressures. With a 10% decline in overall farmland use in Oregon from 2002 to 2022, the increase in hazelnut acreage suggests a strategic pivot by farmers towards more profitable crops. This trend could influence agricultural policies and investment in the region, potentially leading to increased economic stability for farmers who are struggling with low prices for traditional crops. The success of hazelnuts may also encourage further innovation and diversification in the agricultural sector, providing a model for other regions facing similar challenges.
