A recent study published in Environment International has found hundreds of environmental chemicals, including insecticides, herbicides, and other contaminants, in human thyroid cancer tissues. The research, conducted on differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC)
and non-cancer cadaver thyroid tissues in Atlanta, Georgia, identified 442 environmental chemicals in total, with a median of 302 annotated chemicals per individual sample. Approximately 40% of these identified chemicals were potential endocrine-disrupting chemicals. The study utilized ultra-high-resolution gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) exposomics to screen for these compounds. While the presence of a chemical in a tumor sample does not automatically imply causation, the authors suggest that many of these chemicals, which have not undergone formal carcinogen classification by agencies like the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), should be prioritized for carcinogenesis testing.
