What's Happening?
The Cole Shergi Legacy Fund has been recognized with the Observer-Reporter Driven By Hope Award, sponsored by Washington Auto Mall, for its significant positive impact on the community. Founded by Melio, Cole Shergi's father, the fund was established
following Cole's death at age 20 in a UTV accident on November 6, 2022. The fund's primary mission is to honor Cole's memory by giving back to the community and assisting young people in pursuing their dreams. Since its inception three and a half years ago, the fund has awarded approximately $40,000 in scholarships to students from Burgettstown, Avella, and Fort Cherry school districts. Beyond scholarships, the organization has contributed nearly $35,000 to various charitable causes and individuals in need, including support for local families, youth sports, community organizations, medical and funeral expenses, and providing over 350 Christmas gifts to children and families.
Why It's Important?
The Cole Shergi Legacy Fund's efforts are vital for the local communities it serves, providing crucial financial support and opportunities for young individuals. The scholarships directly address educational access, enabling students to pursue higher education and vocational training, which can significantly impact their future economic prospects and community development. The broader charitable contributions, ranging from supporting families to youth sports, strengthen the social fabric and provide a safety net for those facing hardship. This initiative demonstrates how personal tragedy can be transformed into a powerful force for good, inspiring community engagement and collective action. The recognition through the Driven By Hope Award also highlights the importance of local philanthropy and community-led initiatives in addressing societal needs that might otherwise go unmet, fostering a sense of hope and resilience within the affected areas.
What's Next?
Melio, the founder and president of The Cole Shergi Legacy Fund, aims to continue expanding the fund's reach and impact, emphasizing that it belongs to the community as much as to his family. The fund relies heavily on community support, including donations, volunteers, and local businesses willing to contribute time, services, auction items, or sponsorships for events. Melio also recently authored a book, 'Give Heaven Some Hell,' which chronicles his journey through grief and loss, connecting it to the fund's mission of turning pain into purpose. The goal is to ensure Cole's legacy continues to bring hope, opportunity, and kindness to others, with a particular focus on supporting young people's dreams. The fund encourages community members to spread awareness and participate in its initiatives to further its mission.
Beyond the Headlines
