The Michigan Office of Defense and Aerospace Innovation (ODAI) recently hosted the 2025 MiSpace Hackathon, engaging over a hundred Michigan-based undergraduate students to develop satellite-driven predictive models for Great Lakes ice packs. This initiative
aims to address the significant economic and security risks posed by ice on the Great Lakes, which impacts a $35 billion maritime economy. The hackathon encouraged students to use space-based data to create solutions that could provide the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) with advanced notice of ice formation, thereby improving operational efficiency and reducing costs. The winning team, IceScope GL from the University of Michigan, developed a user-friendly interface that offers a four-day predictive window for icebreakers, significantly enhancing the USCG's ability to manage ice-related challenges.
