What's Happening?
The Lac La Belle, a luxury passenger steamer that sank in Lake Michigan over 150 years ago, has been discovered by shipwreck hunter Paul Ehorn. The ship, which set off from Milwaukee to Grand Haven, Michigan, in October 1872, was carrying 53 passengers
and crew along with a large cargo of barley, flour, pork, and whiskey. Shortly into its journey, the ship began to leak, and despite efforts to return to Milwaukee, it was overcome by a storm and sank. Ehorn, who has been searching for the Lac La Belle since 1965, found the wreck using side-scan sonar, aided by a clue from fellow wreck hunter Ross Richardson. The ship was located about 20 miles offshore between Racine and Kenosha, Wisconsin. The discovery was announced after a delay to include a 3D video model of the wreck.
Why It's Important?
The finding of the Lac La Belle is a significant achievement in the field of shipwreck exploration, highlighting the persistence and expertise required in this challenging endeavor. The Great Lakes are home to thousands of shipwrecks, many of which remain undiscovered. This discovery contributes to the historical record of maritime activity in the region and provides a tangible connection to the past. The Lac La Belle's preservation offers insights into 19th-century ship construction and the perils faced by vessels on the Great Lakes. The discovery also raises awareness about the preservation challenges posed by invasive species, which threaten the integrity of underwater cultural heritage.
What's Next?
Ehorn plans to present his findings at the 2026 Ghost Ships Festival in Wisconsin, where he will showcase video footage and images of the Lac La Belle. The creation of a 3D photogrammetry model will help document the wreck's current state and serve as a resource for future research. The discovery may encourage further exploration of the Great Lakes, as shipwreck hunters continue to seek out other lost vessels. Ehorn's work exemplifies the ongoing interest in maritime history and the technological advancements that aid in uncovering these underwater treasures.
