German aeroengine manufacturer RED Aircraft has teamed up with UK-based Helix to develop a hybrid-electric generator aimed at enhancing auxiliary power units (APUs) for aircraft. This new generator combines RED's A03 diesel-cycle piston engine with Helix's
SPX177 radial-flux electric motor, offering significant reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to traditional turbine APUs. The generator can produce up to 380 kW of peak electric power and operates on jet fuel, providing a more efficient and quieter alternative.
