What's Happening?
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has resumed alumina production at its Al Taweelah refinery in Abu Dhabi after a suspension that began in March 2026 due to Iranian attacks on the Khalifa Economic Zone. The company expects production to reach 50% of the plant's
capacity within days, with plans to achieve full production by the end of the year. The refinery, which began operations in 2019, plays a crucial role in supplying alumina to EGA's smelters. The resumption of production is a significant step in restoring the refinery's operations and ensuring a stable supply of alumina for aluminium production.
Why It's Important?
The resumption of alumina production at the Al Taweelah refinery is crucial for EGA and the broader aluminium industry. Alumina is a key raw material for aluminium production, and disruptions in its supply can impact the entire production chain. By restoring operations, EGA can stabilize its supply chain and meet its production targets, which is vital for maintaining its competitive position in the global aluminium market. This development also highlights the resilience of industrial operations in the face of geopolitical challenges and the importance of strategic planning to mitigate risks associated with supply chain disruptions.
