What's Happening?
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture recently hosted Farm City Days at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex, welcoming over 1,600 K-8 students from southcentral Pennsylvania. This event is part of Governor Josh Shapiro's initiative to create career
opportunities in agriculture and invest in a skilled workforce. Students engaged in hands-on activities such as interacting with farm animals, using agricultural drones, and learning about farm machinery. The event aims to inspire students to consider careers in agriculture, a sector that supports one in ten jobs in Pennsylvania and contributes $132.5 billion annually to the state's economy.
Why It's Important?
Farm City Days highlights the importance of agriculture in Pennsylvania's economy and the need for a new generation of skilled workers in this field. By exposing students to the diverse opportunities within agriculture, the event seeks to address future workforce needs and ensure the state's continued leadership in the industry. The initiative aligns with Governor Shapiro's broader educational goals, which include significant investments in public schools and career training programs. These efforts are crucial for maintaining Pennsylvania's economic vitality and supporting rural communities.
What's Next?
Following the success of Farm City Days, a second event is planned in collaboration with Variety – The Children’s Charity of the Delaware Valley. This upcoming event will further promote accessibility in agriculture, ensuring that students of all abilities can explore career opportunities in the field. Additionally, the Shapiro Administration continues to support agricultural innovation through grants and increased funding for career and technical education, aiming to sustain long-term growth and resilience in the sector.
