What's Happening?
Parks Tacoma and Tacoma Public Schools have announced the creation of a new middle school sports league, offering a variety of sports including girls flag football, boys soccer, and coed flag football.
The league, named 'Power League,' aims to provide an alternative for students who do not make varsity or junior varsity teams but still wish to play competitively. Registration costs $50 and is open until November 14, with practices starting on November 17. The league will run for 10 weeks, featuring paid coaching staff trained through the Inversa curriculum.
Why It's Important?
The launch of the Power League is significant as it addresses the need for increased physical activity among middle school students, particularly in Pierce County where only 19% of youth meet the recommended daily activity levels. By providing structured sports opportunities, the league aims to improve physical and mental health, foster community pride, and encourage youth engagement. The initiative reflects a growing trend towards inclusivity in sports, offering opportunities for all students regardless of skill level.
What's Next?
The league will commence with girls flag football and boys soccer, with potential expansion to include sports like golf, crew, and lacrosse. The program will culminate in a citywide end-of-season showcase tournament, providing students with a platform to demonstrate their skills and growth. The success of the league may lead to further investment in youth sports programs and partnerships with local organizations to enhance sports accessibility and development.
