The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining in Jamaica has announced a recovery plan for the poultry sector following significant losses due to Hurricane Melissa. Minister Floyd Green revealed that
over 1.1 million birds were lost, including 458,000 layers and more than 700,000 broiler chickens. This loss is notably higher than the 300,000 chickens lost during Hurricane Beryl in 2024. The ministry has allocated approximately $40 million to revitalize backyard chicken operations, aiming to purchase 100,000 broiler chickens to support small farmers.
