What's Happening?
Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, Dr. Pemmasani Chandrasekhar, has raised concerns about the underutilization of green manure potential in Guntur district. During a review meeting with Agriculture Department officials,
Dr. Chandrasekhar noted that only 50% to 60% of the green manure potential is being utilized. He emphasized that out of the four lakh acres available in the district, nearly two lakh acres have the potential for green manure cultivation. The minister directed officials to focus on effectively utilizing the available 66,000 acres for this purpose. The meeting also covered strategies to enhance farmers' income and the development of third crop cultivation, particularly in light of the additional irrigation water expected from the completion of the Polavaram Project.
Why It's Important?
The underutilization of green manure in Guntur district represents a missed opportunity for enhancing soil fertility and increasing agricultural productivity. Green manure can significantly improve soil health, reduce dependency on chemical fertilizers, and increase crop yields, which are crucial for the sustainability of agriculture in the region. The focus on third crop cultivation and the potential benefits from the Polavaram Project could lead to increased agricultural output and farmer income. This development is significant for the local economy and could serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges.
What's Next?
Officials are expected to develop and implement plans to maximize the use of green manure and prepare for third crop cultivation. The completion of the Polavaram Project will be a critical factor, as it promises additional irrigation resources that could transform agricultural practices in the district. The success of these initiatives could lead to broader adoption of sustainable agricultural practices across the region.
