Paleontologists in southern Wyoming have identified a new species of omomyid primate, named Tetonius varleyorum, from 50-million-year-old sandstone. This discovery adds to the understanding of the omomyid family, which includes small, big-eyed, tarsier-like
primates that lived in North America during the Eocene epoch. The fossils, found at a site called Tim’s Confession in the Smiley Draw local fauna, include jaw and tooth fragments. This site has yielded nearly 1,000 tooth-bearing jaw fragments from various ancient mammals. The discovery of Tetonius varleyorum, alongside two other rare omomyid species, Arapahovius gazini and Anemorhysis savage, marks the first time three separate species of these primates have been found together at a single early Eocene site. This finding challenges previous evolutionary models that suggested a linear progression without branching, known as anagenesis.
