What's Happening?
Almasane Alkobra Mining Company (AMAK) has announced the discovery of potentially economically viable copper, zinc, gold, and silver resources in the Najran region of southern Saudi Arabia. The discovery was
made within one of AMAK's exploration licenses, which was granted in September 2024. Since then, the company has conducted extensive drilling, covering over 27,000 meters as part of a program initiated in February 2025. Preliminary studies suggest a mineral resource of approximately 11 million tonnes, with potential for further expansion as current drilling has covered less than 10% of the licensed area. AMAK plans to continue geophysical surveys and additional drilling in 2026, aiming to expand resource estimates and publish a comprehensive mineral resource report in the latter half of 2026. Concurrently, AMAK is undertaking concept development studies to transition the exploration license into a mining license, with results expected next year.
Why It's Important?
The discovery of these mineral resources in Najran is significant for Saudi Arabia's mining sector, potentially enhancing the country's position in the global minerals market. The presence of copper, zinc, gold, and silver could lead to increased economic activity and investment in the region, contributing to Saudi Arabia's diversification efforts away from oil dependency. The development of these resources may attract international partnerships and boost local employment, fostering economic growth. Additionally, the strategic location of the exploration site, approximately 100 km from AMAK's existing processing hub, could facilitate efficient resource processing and distribution, further strengthening the country's mining infrastructure.
What's Next?
AMAK plans to continue its exploration activities in 2026, with further geophysical surveys and drilling programs to expand the resource estimates. The company is also working on concept development studies to advance the exploration license to a mining license, with results expected next year. These steps are crucial for transitioning from exploration to production, potentially leading to the establishment of new mining operations in the Najran region. The publication of the maiden mineral resource report in the second half of 2026 will provide detailed insights into the resource potential, guiding future investment and development strategies.
