that while natural causes contribute to fish deaths, human-caused events are far more devastating, responsible for over 90 percent of recorded fish deaths despite making up only about half of the reported incidents. The primary culprits identified are animal waste and ammonia fertilizer, which together account for 30 percent of all reported fish kills and 79 percent of dead fish. Hogs are the most common animal source. Fish kills also follow seasonal patterns, with over one in four occurring in August, a period of low water levels and high temperatures, making waterways more susceptible to pollution impacts. Certain stream segments have also experienced recurrent pollution-caused kills.
