Hainan Island in China has experienced a significant boost in luxury retail sales following its designation as a Special Customs Supervision Zone. This change, effective from December 18, has led to a 54.9%
increase in duty-free shopping turnover, reaching 1.1 billion renminbi ($157 million) in the first week. The island's top shopping destination, CDF Sanya International Duty Free Shopping Complex, reported over 80% growth in sales and a 60% increase in foot traffic. Gold jewelry, electronics, premium cosmetics, and luxury goods are among the top-selling categories. Notably, gold retailers like Chow Tai Fook and Luk Fook saw sales growth exceeding 300%. The island's duty-free sector is expected to expand further with upcoming projects like DFS Yalong Bay and Swire Properties' retail complex in Sanya.
