What's Happening?
Nikki von Bülow, an HR consultant, has been actively involved in mentoring refugees through the CIPD Trust's Rebuilding Futures program. This initiative aims to assist refugees in integrating into the UK workforce by providing them with mentorship and
support. Von Bülow, who has a background in HR and mediation, decided to volunteer after feeling disheartened by the negative reception refugees often face. She was paired with Hamza, a civil and structural engineer from Afghanistan, who was living in challenging conditions in the UK. Despite initial anxieties about her ability to help, von Bülow found the experience rewarding and impactful. The program provides mentors with training and connects them with mentees who have been granted settled status in the UK. Through her network, von Bülow was able to help Hamza secure shadowing opportunities, which eventually led to his employment as a site manager in London.
Why It's Important?
The involvement of HR professionals in mentoring refugees is significant as it addresses the barriers refugees face in entering the workforce, such as lack of local experience and references. Programs like Rebuilding Futures not only provide practical support but also foster a sense of community and belonging for refugees. This initiative highlights the role of HR in driving social value and supporting organizational goals related to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. By leveraging their networks and expertise, HR professionals can make a tangible difference in the lives of refugees, helping them rebuild their careers and integrate into society. This approach also benefits organizations by aligning with their social responsibility objectives and enhancing their reputation as inclusive employers.
What's Next?
The Rebuilding Futures program continues to seek HR professionals willing to volunteer as mentors. As the program grows, it aims to support more refugees and asylum seekers in their career journeys. HR professionals interested in participating are encouraged to consider their availability and the level of support they can provide. The program offers training and resources to ensure mentors are well-prepared to assist their mentees. As more organizations recognize the value of such initiatives, there may be increased collaboration between businesses and programs like Rebuilding Futures to support refugee integration on a larger scale.
