What's Happening?
Richland County Transit (RCT) is offering on-call stops at the board of elections during early voting from April 7 through May 1. Riders can request a stop at the BOE on West Longview Ave. when traveling on Route 5 or Route 9 during operating hours, 7 a.m.
to 6 p.m. weekdays. This initiative aims to make early voting more accessible to the community. Passengers on other routes can transfer to Route 5 or 9 at the RCT Transit Center. The cost of a one-way trip is $2 for adults and $1 for youth, seniors, and disabled riders. RCT also provides free travel training for those needing assistance with bus routes.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of on-call stops for early voting by Richland County Transit is a crucial step in enhancing voter accessibility and participation. By providing convenient transportation options, RCT is addressing barriers that may prevent individuals from voting, such as lack of transportation. This service is particularly beneficial for seniors, disabled individuals, and those with limited mobility, ensuring they can exercise their voting rights. The initiative reflects a broader trend of integrating public transportation with civic engagement efforts, potentially increasing voter turnout and fostering a more inclusive democratic process.
