What's Happening?
Cambodian telecommunications company Cellcard has announced a significant expansion of its 5G network, deploying over 500 new basestations. This expansion doubles its 5G network footprint, now covering approximately 50% of Phnom Penh's population. The
company aims to reach 1,000 5G sites by the end of July, extending coverage across the Cambodian capital, Takhmao, and the Central Region. Cellcard's CEO, Yap Kok Leong, emphasized the focus on providing a high-performance network with strong indoor coverage and speeds up to 1 Gbit/s. The expansion includes key urban areas such as shopping malls, offices, and residential communities. Recently, Cellcard launched its 5G network in Siem Reap, marking it as the third city to receive 5G services after Phnom Penh and Takhmao.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Cellcard's 5G network is a significant step towards enhancing digital connectivity in Cambodia. By focusing on strong indoor coverage and high-speed internet, Cellcard is addressing the growing demand for reliable digital services in urban areas. This development is crucial for businesses, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities that rely on robust internet connectivity. The expansion also positions Cambodia as a more competitive player in the Southeast Asian telecommunications market, potentially attracting more foreign investment and technological partnerships. For consumers, the improved network promises better service quality and access to advanced digital applications.
