What's Happening?
High Point University (HPU) recently held its annual Life Skills Career Summit at the Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena and Conference Center, bringing together over 100 national, regional, and local employers with HPU students. The event, organized by HPU’s
Office of Career and Professional Development, aims to facilitate connections for summer internships and post-graduation jobs. Recruiters from prominent companies such as Lenovo, the Charlotte Hornets, Cintas, Disney Entertainment, the FBI, Furnitureland South, Northwestern Mutual, Old Dominion Freight Line, Syngenta, and Volvo were present. Students attended professionally dressed, engaged with recruiters, and had the opportunity to receive complimentary professional headshots for their LinkedIn profiles. The summit also featured career advice from Teena Piccione, HPU’s Data Expert in Residence and former Google executive, who spoke on 'Standing Out When AI Flattens You Out,' emphasizing the importance of human connection and networking in an AI-driven world.
Why It's Important?
This career summit is crucial for HPU students as it provides direct access to a diverse range of employers, offering valuable networking opportunities and potential job or internship placements. In an increasingly competitive job market, events like these bridge the gap between academic learning and professional careers, allowing students to gain practical experience in interviewing and professional communication. The inclusion of advice on navigating the job market in the age of artificial intelligence, as provided by Teena Piccione, is particularly significant. It highlights the evolving landscape of employment and the need for students to develop unique skills and foster human connections that AI cannot replicate. For employers, the summit offers a platform to identify and recruit talent, with many alumni returning to represent their companies, underscoring the value they place on HPU graduates' professionalism and preparedness.
What's Next?
Following the career summit, students are expected to follow up on the connections made, potentially leading to interviews, internships, and job offers. The advice given by Teena Piccione, particularly regarding networking and distinguishing oneself in an AI-influenced job market, will likely guide students in their subsequent job search efforts. HPU's Office of Career and Professional Development will continue to organize similar career and internship expos twice each academic year, along with major-specific career fairs and numerous professional events, ensuring ongoing support for students' career development. Alumni who participated as recruiters or mentors are likely to maintain their engagement with HPU, potentially leading to continued recruitment from the university and further mentorship opportunities for current students.
Beyond the Headlines
The HPU career summit reflects a broader trend in higher education to equip students with practical skills and direct industry exposure beyond traditional classroom learning. The emphasis on 'earning-while-learning' and the focus on human interaction in the context of AI underscore a growing recognition that while technology advances, the human element remains paramount in professional success. The event also highlights the strong alumni network of HPU, demonstrating how former students contribute to the career development of current ones, fostering a cycle of mentorship and professional growth. This approach not only prepares students for immediate employment but also instills a long-term perspective on career navigation, adaptability, and the importance of continuous learning and networking in a rapidly changing global economy.
