What's Happening?
The World Humanist Forum is preparing for its Sixth Open Assembly, scheduled for November 28 and 29, 2026. The assembly, operating under the theme 'Opening up the Future: Change is possible and depends on our action,' will adopt a hybrid format, combining
in-person meetings with virtual connections to facilitate global participation. Key discussions will revolve around addressing pressing global issues such as war, poverty, the nuclear threat, natural disasters, and various forms of violence. The forum aims to foster collective action for positive transformation, emphasizing a structural and systemic understanding that transcends individual issues. The agenda includes reports from the Eighth Humanist Forum in Morocco and discussions from various thematic tables covering areas like Health, Human Rights, Social Ecology, Education, Decolonisation, Peace and Disarmament, economic system changes including Universal Basic Income, and the fight against gender-based violence. New initiatives, such as a Youth Thematic Table and a Parallel Diplomacy Table, will also be launched.
Why It's Important?
This assembly is important as it seeks to mobilize diverse sectors of society to address complex global challenges through a humanist lens. By promoting simultaneous social and personal transformation, the forum aims to cultivate non-violent attitudes and foster a sense of shared humanity. The emphasis on a Universal Basic Income and profound changes in the economic system could influence policy discussions and advocacy efforts in the U.S. and internationally, potentially impacting economic stability and social welfare programs. The focus on Peace and Disarmament, Human Rights, and Social Ecology aligns with ongoing global dialogues and could contribute to shaping international relations and environmental policies. The inclusion of a Parallel Diplomacy Table highlights a growing recognition of civil society's role in international mediation, potentially offering new avenues for conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts that could involve U.S. non-governmental organizations and diplomatic initiatives.
What's Next?
Following the Sixth Open Assembly, the World Humanist Forum plans to continue its work through its thematic tables, which will analyze the program and actions for follow-up. Participants will be invited to commit to contributing to the construction of a 'Universal Human Nation.' The newly launched Youth Thematic Table and Parallel Diplomacy Table are expected to develop their frameworks and begin their respective activities, potentially leading to new initiatives in youth engagement and civil society-led diplomacy. The forum's ongoing engagement with social, academic, and institutional sectors suggests continued efforts to promote its proposals for change and humanization. The outcomes and recommendations from this assembly could inform future advocacy campaigns and collaborative projects aimed at addressing global challenges, potentially influencing U.S. foreign policy and humanitarian aid strategies.
Beyond the Headlines
The World Humanist Forum's approach of fostering both social and personal transformation delves into the deeper ethical and cultural dimensions of global challenges. By emphasizing the cultivation of inner selves towards non-violent attitudes, the forum suggests that systemic change must be accompanied by individual moral development. This perspective challenges conventional problem-solving methods that often focus solely on external policy or economic adjustments. The forum's historical roots, tracing back to its founding in Moscow in 1993 by Silo, highlight a long-standing commitment to humanism and non-violence, offering a continuous philosophical framework for addressing contemporary issues. The promotion of Music, Art, and Culture as tools for peace and non-violence underscores the belief in the power of cultural exchange and creative expression to bridge divides and foster understanding, potentially influencing cultural diplomacy efforts and international artistic collaborations.
