What's Happening?
The Coffee Agroforestry E-Library, a comprehensive online database dedicated to scientific literature on shade-grown coffee, has been launched by Coffee Watch and the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher
Education Center (CATIE). This open-access platform consolidates decades of research from various languages and countries into a single, searchable resource. It aims to support evidence-based decision-making across the coffee sector by providing information on climate change adaptation, biodiversity benefits, and farmer income diversification through agroforestry. The E-Library is designed to grow over time, with new research continuously added, serving as a living knowledge base for stakeholders committed to sustainable coffee practices.
Why It's Important?
The launch of the Coffee Agroforestry E-Library is significant as it addresses the scattered nature of scientific evidence on shade-grown coffee, which is crucial for climate resilience and biodiversity conservation. By making this information accessible, the platform can accelerate the transition to sustainable coffee landscapes, benefiting farmers and the environment. The E-Library supports the development of policies and practices that enhance tree cover, empower farmers, and build climate resilience, which is vital as scientists warn that half of global coffee could vanish by 2050 without significant strides towards climate-proofing.
