What's Happening?
Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Gunner Stockton has signed a new Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal with Whataburger and Dr. Pepper. Stockton, who has emerged as a key player for Georgia, stepped in as quarterback in 2024
following Carson Beck's departure to Miami. Currently, Stockton has impressive stats with 1,776 yards and 12 touchdowns over eight games. His performance has placed him among the top quarterbacks in Power 4 football and given him the fifth-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy. Stockton's latest NIL deal adds to his existing agreements with Associated Credit Union, HEYDUDE footwear, and Raising Cane’s.
Why It's Important?
The NIL deal highlights the growing trend of college athletes capitalizing on their personal brands. Stockton's agreement with major food and beverage companies underscores the lucrative opportunities available to athletes in the current sports landscape. This development is significant for the NCAA, as it reflects the evolving dynamics of college sports where athletes can now monetize their fame. The deal also positions Stockton in the ongoing fast-food rivalry, aligning him with Whataburger in the competitive market against brands like McDonald's and In-n-Out Burger.
What's Next?
Stockton and the Georgia Bulldogs are set to face Mississippi State in Starkville, Mississippi. The game will be broadcast on ESPN, providing Stockton with further exposure. As NIL deals continue to grow, Stockton may secure additional endorsements, further enhancing his brand and financial prospects. The outcome of the upcoming game could influence Stockton's standing in the Heisman Trophy race, potentially impacting future NIL opportunities.
