What's Happening?
L3Harris has secured a contract with South Korea to supply airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft under the E-X Phase 2 program, valued at KRW3.1 trillion ($2.2 billion). The contract involves the delivery of 'Phoenix' AEW aircraft, which integrates Israel's Elta EL/W-2085 radar with a Bombardier Global 6500 business jet. This marks the first export of this aircraft type and the first integration of a conformal radar system onto the Global 6500. The Republic of Korea Air Force currently operates Boeing 737 'Peace Eye' AEW aircraft, and the new assets will extend coverage over the Korean peninsula and surrounding airspace.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of additional AEW aircraft is significant for South Korea's defense strategy, enhancing its ability to monitor and respond to threats from North Korea and neighboring countries. L3Harris's selection over competitors like Saab and Boeing underscores the importance of operational suitability, life cycle costs, and industrial participation in defense contracts. The program will involve local participation, including system integration at Korean Air Aerospace Division facilities, which supports domestic industry and technology transfer. This contract strengthens South Korea's air defense capabilities and reflects the strategic importance of advanced radar systems in modern military operations.
What's Next?
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) plans to finalize the contract with L3Harris and initiate the program by November. This will involve extensive local participation and production of radar components, fostering collaboration between South Korean and international defense industries. The successful implementation of this program could lead to further opportunities for L3Harris in the region, as well as advancements in AEW technology and capabilities.
