An international study, including contributions from over 500 New Zealand participants and researchers from the University of Otago, has identified distinct genetic signatures for binge eating and anorexia nervosa. The research, led by King’s College
London and the University of North Carolina, is the first large-scale effort to map and compare the genetic profiles of these eating disorders. A significant finding is a stronger genetic relationship between anorexia nervosa and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), suggesting shared biological underpinnings. Conversely, binge eating showed a stronger association with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The study analyzed DNA from tens of thousands of individuals globally, revealing that while both eating disorders share some genetic influences, they also possess significant biological differences.
