What's Happening?
The Bethlehem Apostolic Temple is hosting a charity basketball game on November 8 at Wheeling University’s Alma Grace McDonough Center. The event will feature the Ohio Valley Lions against the Ohio Valley All-Stars, comprised of local leaders and celebrities.
The primary goal of this fundraiser is to collect money for the church's annual Thanksgiving food distribution, scheduled for November 21 at the North Wheeling Community Dream Center. Bishop Darrell Cummings, lead pastor at the church, highlighted the increasing struggles with food insecurity and rising costs in the Ohio Valley, emphasizing the special need for support this year. Participants in the game include West Virginia Sen. Laura Wakim Chapman, Del. Shawn Fluharty, and Tammy Kruse from Youth Services System. Wheeling Mayor Denny Magruder and Dr. William Mercer will serve as coaches for the teams.
Why It's Important?
This charity event is important as it directly addresses the growing issue of food insecurity within the Ohio Valley region. Bishop Darrell Cummings noted that many residents are facing financial difficulties due to climbing prices and stagnant wages, making it harder to afford basic necessities like food and transportation. The involvement of local political figures and community leaders, such as Senator Chapman, Delegate Fluharty, and Mayor Magruder, underscores the community-wide recognition of this challenge and the collaborative effort to mitigate it. The funds raised will provide essential Thanksgiving meals to families in need, offering not only nourishment but also a sense of hope, as stated by Mayor Magruder. This initiative demonstrates how community organizations and local government can unite to support vulnerable populations during economically challenging times.

Beyond the Headlines
The charity basketball game transcends a simple fundraising event, serving as a powerful symbol of community solidarity and resilience in the face of economic adversity. The participation of local leaders and celebrities not only draws attention to the cause but also fosters a sense of collective responsibility and unity within the Ohio Valley. This initiative highlights the critical role that faith-based organizations like the Bethlehem Apostolic Temple play in providing essential social services and support networks, especially when public resources may be strained.
