What's Happening?
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is encouraging residents to shop locally during Virginia Agriculture Week, which runs from June 7 to 13. Governor Abigail Spanberger highlighted the importance of local farmers and producers,
emphasizing their role in providing food, fueling communities, and supporting the economy. The department is promoting products with the 'Virginia Grown and Virginia’s Finest' logo to help consumers identify local goods. Commissioner Charles Green also urged Virginians to appreciate the quality and variety of local agricultural products, including meats, dairy, fruits, and beverages.
Why It's Important?
This initiative underscores the significant economic impact of Virginia's agriculture industry, which contributes $82 billion annually. By promoting local shopping, the department aims to strengthen the local economy, support farmers, and reduce the carbon footprint associated with transporting goods over long distances. Encouraging local purchases can also enhance community ties and ensure the sustainability of local farms, which are vital for food security and economic resilience.
